After seven years of trying and coming so close to giving up, the SASL finally had applicants for the Over-40 Division.

SASL founder member team Madison AFC resigned from the Over-30 League and became founding members of the SASL Over-40 Division. To mark this change, the club's name was changed to simply Madison FC.

Glastonbury Celtic FC also formed a new Over-40 team and applied to join the division.

Discussions were held with the other teams from the competing Over-40 League in Connecticut, formed by SASL founder Alfie Campbell, in order to determine if any of their teams would have liked to have participated in a more competitive environment. The SASL was also offering insurance and referees via their affiliation with the Connecticut State Soccer Association. There was interest from several of the teams, but they were convinced otherwise by Alfie at their own League meeting several days later.

The SASL drafted a new team just formed into the Over-40 Division with Celtic and Madison. Milford Hurricanes were a fledgling team with many novice players, several under-40 players and a couple of women players, but they were only too happy to build up their experience with the Over-40 teams.

The Over-30 League finally created a Fourth Division after merging the Third Division East and Third Division West back together.

Madison FC became the first Over-40 team to enter the Connecticut State Soccer Association Over-30 State Cup.

The CSSA change the format of the Over-30 State Cup from a straight knockout tournament to World Cup style group games followed by quarter-finals, etc. It proved to be a huge success because it allowed each team to have minimally three games in the competition. The CSSA also reduced the entry fee from $150 to $50 which made the competition enormous value for money.

After 11 years in the SASL, perennial power New Haven Portuguese resigned from the League owing to difficulties finding somebody willing to manage the club.

Fairfield GAC 'A' reverted to their old name of Fairfield Celtic. Fairfield GAC 'B' simply became Fairfield GAC.

Orange Burger King became defunct and Orange SC absorbed their better players.

Branford United became Inter United to reflect their Italian heritage.

New teams to enter the Over-30 League were Middletown SC, New Haven Chile, Newington Portuguese and Newtown Salty Dogs.

Disaster struck the Over-40 Division at the end of Spring when Glastonbury Celtic FC decided to disband their Over-40 team owing to a lack of competition and other circumstances. Madison and Milford were left to soldier on playing a series of friendlies versus the idle Fourth Division team.

At the end of Spring, Madison FC were the top team of the Over-40 Division, making them the first official SASL Over-40 Champions.

After relative success against all Over-40 and Fourth Division opposition in 1998 (they were never beaten) Madison FC decide to revert back to the Over-30 League as a Fourth Division side for 1999. It was a further setback to the future of the Over-40 Division.

White Eagles broke the Waterbury Morse Watchman monopoly on the League and Cup "Double" -- by winning the "Double" themselves!
