The CSSA Over-40 State Cup Final was played on Wednesday evening at Rotary (Breen) Field, Naugatuck:
Trumbull Tip Top (SASL) 3, New Britain Pulaski (CARSL) 2
Tip Top pulled off another wonderous upset to beat the heavily favoured Pulaski side that has stormed through this season's competition.
CSSA Cup Committee Chairman Dave Carmody sends in this match report:
"All five goals came in the first half. New Britain Pulaski dominated the opening few minutes of play and scored on a nice long strike combination at 4:16.
"Trumbull, rather than being demoralized concentrated on short passes, midfield control and power shots from 18-22 yards out. They pressed hard and scored at 14:49, 18:08 and 32:29 to take a 3-1 lead. Pulaski then countered at 39:30 to make the score 3-2 at the half.
"The second half was quite even with many strikes and strong counter attacks by both teams. Fine defensive work was displayed by both sides.
"New Britain pressed hard and kept Trumbull on the defensive during the last 5 minutes of regulation and the 2 minutes of time added-on, but were unable to find the net.
"Both teams are to be congratulated for fine play."
Thanks again, Dave!
This was the first Over-40 State Cup Final for both teams and Pulaski were the first non-SASL team to get to the Final since the Cup was inaugurated in 2002.
History of the CSSA Over-40 State Cup Final:
2002 Wallingford NH United 2, Hartford Cavaliers 0
2003 Glastonbury Celtic FC 2, Wallingford NH United 1
2004 Wallingford NH United 4, Glastonbury Celtic FC 1
2005 North Branford Club Napoli 4, Danbury United 0
2006 Trumbull Tip Top 3, New Britain Pulaski 2
It should be pointed out that Wallingford NH United changed names to North Branford Club Napoli and therefore appeared in the first four Finals, winning three of them. Winning three State Cups means the club keeps the "Bertil A. Larson" Over-40 State Cup trophy forever. This season a new CSSA Over-40 State Cup trophy is named for Alan R. Schumann and it shall be awarded to Trumbull Tip Top at the CSSA's Annual General Meeting in early 2007.
North Branford Club Napoli are now known as Club Napoli 'A' and surprised everybody by failing to qualify out of the group stage of the competition this season.
